Global report on sharks, rays, and chimaeras
December 14, 2024Congratulations Joel Gayford, the first recipient of our new Flying Sharks Research Fund format, with new rules and application times available here.
Joel is conducting his Ph.D. on the shape and size of body appendages and will be conducting a collaborative research visit to the SeaTech Lab at Florida Atlantic University in September 2025 to test his hypothesis. Using the world-class facilities at FAU, he will produce and print 3D models of adult and juvenile individuals of a number of shark species, using CT scan data.
He will then place these models in flume tanks to measure hydrodynamic lift and drag coefficients. This will allow Joel to test whether allometric growth is associated with increases, decreases, or maintenance of
lift : drag ratios.
This funding will contribute to offsetting his travelling costs and we were therefore delighted to send him 500 euros. Go, Joel!
