Remember Michelle Carpenter, who received 500 euros from us in December 2021??
Michelle just sent us an update on her South African mant ray project and further explained that the money has been used to fund her travel to Sodwana Bay, and for two fieldwork days in the iSimangaliso Offshore Wilderness Zone.
Michelle encountered two manta rays and collected GPS points, photoID, plankton data, and all environmental variables. The Flying Sharks Fund also secondarily supported several other ongoing research projects at SharkLife, including monitoring the elasmobranch diversity and abundance of species in and outside the Wilderness Sanctuary using Underwater Visual Census Surveys (UVCs) and Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) surveys.
