Congratulations Iracema Hussein, who received some funding from us waaaaaay back in 2021, when she started her Ph.D. at the University of Aveiro, under Professor Fernando Morgado’s inspired mentorship. We were also happy to give Iracema a few tips on stock assessment estimates and our good ol’ friend Excel, which is the backbone of this operation.
Iracema traveled all the way to Aveiro from the troubled province of Cabo Delgado in Mozambique, facing challenges that we, in Europe and, can’t even fathom. She was away from her family, left in one of the most dangerous areas of the planet, and somehow managed to write a whole doctorate on the socio-economic and environmental aspects of artisanal fisheries in Cabo Delgado.
We were all delighted to take part in Iracema’s Ph.D. defense on the 18th of January, and award her the highest grade in the books, with a commendation for her resilience and courage throughout this five years long challenge.
We were also proud to take a small part in Iracema’s success, by transferring her 500 euros back in the beginning of this adventure.
