Due to the construction of a +5km bridge connecting the maldivian islands of Male, Villingili, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi affecting their coral reefs, the local NGO Save the Beach Maldives relocated 2000 coral colonies to the north of Villingili. Thanks to the sponsorship of Flying Sharks and the support of Fundación Blue Life, Pablo Montoto, a member of Coral Doctors Maldives, in association with Nicole Kube, from the German Oceanographic Museum, could join the relocation team with the rest of Coral Doctor´s colleagues.

Only 15 days after the relocation, several corals were already attaching to the frames and overgrowing the cable ties. Coral Doctors used the opportunity to check also on the development stage of the gametes of several stony corals with Save the Beach to document the sexual reproduction cycles of this key species.

This project came to us before the Covid-19 pandemic and, of course, it was delayed because of that. Still, we couldn’t help ourselves but to wire these amazing folks 1.000 euros, knowing full well that they wouldn’t hesitate to fulfill their promise as soon as possible, which they did a few weeks ago!

As usual, we made a contribution to APECE, Loving the Planet and Faidout as well.
