For many years we did our “Shark Course” in Peniche, but the pandemic got in the way of our latest edition, so…
…”If the Mountain won’t go to Mohammed, then Mohammed must come to the Mountain”, which is why we flew to Tel Aviv to meet our friend Alon Levy from the Israel Aquarium, where we spent one week delivering our “Shark Course” to Alon’s amazing staff!
This course covered issues as vast as:
Basic life support systems & water quality issues
Receiving sharks and rays into facility and acclimation – preparing staff
Fish collections basics and equipment
Fish transport basics and equipment
Building a long lasting Aquarium staff – hierarchy and responsibilities
Feeding in mixed species exhibits – how to get everyone fed without undue stress
Functional anatomy of sharks
Stress – effects, clinical signs to look for and prevention
Anesthesia and pharmacology – basic principles
Nutrition of teleosts and elasmobranchs – veterinary aspects
Welfare, training and enrichment – general approach
Training and enrichment in the Aquarium setting
We’d like to thank our friends in Israel for their warm hospitality and we can’t wait to get back to the Holy City, and float around in the Dead Sea!
