New paper out :: Two Decades of In Situ Conservation
February 4, 2024Another day, another paper
March 9, 2024Wendell has spent his last few years in the Azores, where he’s been immersing himself more in the deep-water fisheries universe and he also recently got a Ph.D. scholarship at OKEANOS, University of the Azores.
The main goal of Wendell’s thesis is to, for the first time, do a comprehensive analytical assessment of the 22 priority stocks in the Azores, thus reconstructing the biomass and fishing mortality rates while also forecasting simulations using different scenarios of management strategies.
With the World Fisheries Congress around the corner in Seattle, USA, Wendell requested some funds from us so he could attend and do his oral presentation entitled “Enhancing Fisheries Sustainability: Bayesian State-Space Models for Demersal Fish Stock Assessment”.
This study is the first application of an extensive and comprehensive assessment based on data-moderated methods on five priority stocks (Blackspot seabream, Blackbelly rosefish, Forkbeard, Offshore rockfish, and Thornback ray) in Azorean waters. Most of these fish stocks have never been, or cannot be, comprehensively evaluated because of a lack of data.
Needless to say we couldn’t say no to Wendell, so we transferred him 300 euros and wished him a wonderful trip to Seattle!
