In that report, a young woman was talking about Stand4good, an organization which helps young people who didn’t qualify for a scholarship to cover their university tuition fees and therefore can’t pursue a degree due to financial constraints.

In most cases, these young individuals miss out on the blessed scholarship by a mere decimal – or even centisimal (!) – in their scores. The Stand4good representative mentioned that this fact impressed her so much that she decided to do something about it.

We listened attentively to how this organization gathers partners who, through their contributions and donations, help these students get into higher education…

…and he thought to ourselves “We want to help these youngsters too!” And so we did.

As you know, Flying Sharks boasts its Flying Sharks Research Fund since its inception in 2006, and through this initiative, we’ve already helped dozens of young scientists with scholarships of varying amounts, that surpassed a cumulative total of 100.000 euros last summer.

Our latest contribution was therefore 1.000 euros to Stand4good. It’s a modest amount, but when added to other contributions that you can see on this organization’s website, it will provide a significant push to those young individuals whose opportunity of a lifetime slipped away by a narrow margin.

We therefore call upon all entrepreneurs, businesses, and institutions out there reading this message to embrace the spirit of Christmas 2023 and forward a few euros to these friends.

Who knows if you’ll be helping someone who will change the world (for the better)? Who knows if you’ll be making someone… happy?

We’ll never know if we had a decisive impact, but one thing is certain: when faced with a challenge and a problem, we didn’t just sit idly by.

Well, the first good news is that the 7 are now 8, because little Anatoly (who was 4 months old inside mommy Valeriia’s belly) just turned one year old a few days ago. 🙂

The second good news is that we had the chance to help half of the family move to Germany, as they slowly prepare to return to their home in Kiyv. That will happen when a certain world leader stops being a complete d#ckhead, of course.

The move from Portugal to Germany was by bus, and preceded by a lovely Ukrainian borscht dinner, which was delicious! Viktoria, and her three kids, was helped by Valeriia, and both moms faced nearly 48 hours of bus riding with three children! As they themselves said, while we praised their stamina: “We are mothers. We can not be indicisive.”

Three days after, Valeriia took her very first flight from Berlin to Lisbon, and we then drove her to the train station, so she could enjoy dinner with Anatoly back in Maceda – Ovar.

We were delighted to fund most of this journey, which took 1.160 euros out of our Humanitarian Fund, now runnning exclusively on Flying Sharks earnings, since our clients are being a bit stingy with their contributions.

Hopefully this story will inspire them to open their wallets a bit wider. He! He! He!

Most clients were quick to respond and started adding small sums to this fund as well, and we began searching for an ideal partner – such as UNICEF – to donate these funds to.

However, on the 24th of February we all woke up to deeply distressing news, as the Russian army invaded Ukraine. Millions of women and children rushed to flee the country, while the men stayed behind, defending their home from one of the most powerful war machines on the planet.

All of a sudden, Portugal was deeply moved by the plight affecting these millions of Ukrainian souls, and countless individuals and organizations began organizing transport of Ukrainian refugees to our sunny corner of Europe, away from all the madness, at least while the senseless bombing lasts.

It didn’t take long for Flying Sharks to realize that our trip to Stockholm was a perfect excuse to fly to Krakow after delivering six blacktip sharks, and that’s exactly what we did, after putting on our Loving the Planet shirt.

Once there, we rented a 9 seat van for six days, bought some groceries for the trip to Portugal, and drove to a refugee camp, where we picked up a family of 3 adult Ukrainian ladies (one of them 4 months pregnant), 1 young teenage lady, two young girls (4 and 5) and one 11 months old baby boy.

With 400 km driven from the airport to the camp in Przemysl, near the Ukrainian border, we then started our 3.600 km drive to Maceda, a small village in Ovar, north of Portugal, that welcomed our guests with open hearts, after preparing a home for them over the weekend.

The last segment of our adventure included returning the rental van to Krakow airport, which impressed the boys from Carwiz, who logged on the returning van with 7300 km in six days…

Below please find an itemized financial report for this trip, and we’ll take the time to thank the many donations we received from public aquaria and also private individuals, adding up to 2700 euros thus far.

• Meals for 2+2 drivers (round-trip) and 7 Ukrainian passengers: 428 euros

• Van rental: 1094 euros

• Fuel and tolls (round-trip of 7300 km): 2868 euros

• Total = 4390 euros

Needless to say that we haven’t forgotten about the Iemen children, and we are counting on your donations to keep supporting children from Ukraine, Iemen, and indeed the whole world.
