Flying Sharks Research Fund

In 2008 we started adding 10% to all services and those funds become part of the Flying Sharks Research Fund. This money is applied directly on research conducted worlwide, mostly on elasmobranchs, but not exclusively. If you have an interesting research proposal, contact us. We take this time to sincerely thank our sponsoring clients so far. See them all listed at the end of this page.

July 2010 - Congratulations to Ismet Saygu, a young marine biologist from Turkey doing his M.Sc. on elasmobranch local commercial fisheries. We wish Ismet the best of luck with his work towards which we were more than happy to contribute with 1.000 euros. July 2010 - Congratulations to Hema Joshi Saygu, a young researcher from India who needed some funds to attend this year's International Meeting on Marine Resources. Because India is a long way for Hema to come and present her work we cut her a 1.500 euros cheque.
January 2010 - Congratulations to Ilena Zanella, a young marine biologist focusing her studies on shark conservation in Costa Rica, while working with the non-profit organization Misión Tiburón. Ilena and this group are starting a very interesting project on the conservation and spatial dynamic of blacktip and whitetip reef shark populations in Coco's Island National Park and we were delighted to contribute with 1.000 euros for that study. May 2010 - And more congratulations to Ilena Zanella, who just obtained the formal permission from the Cocos Island Marine Conservation Area (ACMIC) for the shark tagging program, and signed the Framework Cooperation Agreement with the ACMIC and the Ministry of Enviroment.

October 2009 - Congratulations to Miguel de Oliveira, who is conducting his Ph.D. on artificial reef growth on a sunken ship off Cape Verde. Miguel presented his work in a Congress in Brazil and asked if we could give him a hand. So we cut him a 500 euros cheque to help out with his travel expenses. September 2009 - Flying Sharks proudly supported the first Portuguese Week of Shark Protection, donating over 900 euros to miscellaneous travel expenses, meals, etc. Check out lots of pictures of this event by clicking here.
August 2009 - Congratulations to Maria João Silva, who is doing her M.Sc. on phisiological stress during transport conditions. If you go to our "Missions" section and check out the "I.R.T.A. / Piscimar 0811" transport, you will see Maria João collecting water samples from the Argyrosomus regius tanks. She later used those samples to determine hormone levels and therefore quantify the progression of "stress" over the trip. We also gave Maria 250 euros for travel expenses. August 2009 - Congratulations to Helga Rodrigues, who is doing her M.Sc. on Portuguese shark dermal denticles, in collaboration with the folks from the Marine Biology Station in Funchal, Madeira. Money was a bit short for Helga when the time came to register as a presenter for the International Meeting on Marine Resources, so we cut Helga a cheque that covers it all.
May 2009 - Congratulations to André Afonso, who is doing his Ph.D. in Brazil, focusing on shark behaviour and interaction with humans. André needed some cash for satellite transmitters and dropped us a line. And we cut him a 2.000 euros cheque! Why not take this opportunity to check out some other scholarships attributed by the Portuguese Elasmobranch Association at APECE.pt? February 2009 - Congratulations to Ana Sequeira, who is on her way to Australia to do her Ph.D. on Whale sharks, and carries a Flying Sharks Research Fund 2.000 euros cheque in her pocket! This is the first "APECE / Flying Sharks" scholarship and we expect there will be many more to come.
January 2009 - Tiago Bento is a former Marine Biology student of E.S.T.M. currently involved with a research project on Sea-urchins. Tiago was in need of a book about the subject but money was tight. Well, we certainly couldn't let something as trivial as "money" get in the way of Tiago's developing career, so we got the good people of Amazon to deliver the book to his doorstep. Tiago thus became the first recipient of funds from the Flying Sharks Research Fund. February 2009 - Charles Darwin turned 200 years old February 12 and C.Q.D. (which is Portuguese for Q.E.D.) decided to throw him a Surprise Birthday Party, with a giant Galapagos Tortoise chocolate cake and everything! They asked us if we'd like to pitch in; well, of course! We wouldn't be in business if it weren't for good ol' Charles start explaining how things work and getting everybody fascinated with the natural world!
