March 2009 - Every new operation starts out with a nice lunch meeting. "Tasca do Joel", in Peniche, was the venue where Flying Sharks and the Coris Team met to plan things out. Back left: Joćo Correia, front left: Raquel Marques, back right: Joćo Amaral, front right: Luķs Silva. March 2009 - A lot of the animals were simply collected from tide pools in Peniche, located on the Portuguese west coast.
March 2009 - Animals collected in the Peniche area are temporarily held at the Superior School of Sea Technology, which is where Joćo and the Coris Team met. The School strongly supports all activities from former students. March 2009 - One of those students is Nuno Vasco Rodrigues, author of this picture (Parablennius pilicornis caught locally and shipped to Tokyo), and many others from his famed book Underwater species guide from Berlengas.
April 2009 - Some of the animals were collected in beautiful Funchal (Madeira), with the kind assistance of Mafalda Freitas and Manuel Biscoito, from the Marine Biology Station. April 2009 - Working conditions in Funchal were exceptionally hard and the team had a very difficult time while collecting in sunny Madeira, with perfect 23 deg C weather... ;-)
April 2009 - Once collected, all animals were temporarily held at the Marine Biology Station, prior to being shipped to Peniche for a few more weeks of staging before the final shipment to Japan. May 2009 - The animals collected in Funchal were simply spectacular, like the stunning Thalassoma pavo, and handled the 24 hour transport well, with 100% survivorship. :-)
