August 2010 - After being in sunny - yet mild weathered - Funchal for one week, moving all of the attention to Olhão, in blazing 42 degree South Portugal, was not easy...
| August 2010 - ...So that's why the very first job was to stretch some shade mesh over the temporary holding station.
|
August 2010 - The other thing we did was add two much needed new large systems and UV lamps, thus lowering both our bio and microbial loads. Which, in all fairness, have never been that high, anyway. But we do what we can to improve on every front.
| August 2010 - And the other thing that we did was these very cool stainless steel tubes to carry our oxygen cylinders while flying. The airlines loved them when they look at them and said it's the safest container, for an oxygen cylinder, they've ever seen.
|
August 2010 - Collections in Olhão underwent as per usual and with the cooperation of the super cool staff from Tunipex.
| August 2010 - At the end of each boat run, everybody holds their breath for a few moments while the 1.000+ Kg heavy tank - loaded with water and fish - is lifted off the boat to dry land.
|
August 2010 - Back on shore, there's no time to rest with 1.500+ fish swimming around in our multiple tanks. Many thanks to Miguel Silva and Filipe Rodrigues who came to the rescue and brought some much needed new arms to the team.
| August 2010 - Trachurus trachurus is just one of the 50+ species collected, and held, over the Summer in Olhão. Sarda sarda, Euthynnus alleteratus, Katsuwonis pelamis and Coryphaena hippurus are but some of other striking names we could mention.
|
August 2010 - And if all that wasn't enough, the guys in Olhão were also the ones preparing every single tank for the big Istanbul charter, which meant mounting 30 brand new tanks from scratch while performing all their daily maintenance duties and collecting. Holy smokes, do those boys deserve a decent Christmas bonus!
| August 2010 - But, how hard and heavy the work load in Olhão might be, them boys have enough sense to take an occasional breather and crack a few jokes over beers. Kudos to the mighty team in Olhão (right to left): Filipe Rodrigues, Miguel Silva, Rogério, José Graça and João Correia (who popped up every now and then just to check on progress and drink some).
