August 2008 - To the south of the island of Faial lies the impressive mountain "Pico", in the island with the same name. We thought climbing Pico would bring us good fortunate in our ventures but decided to have a few Gin & Tonics at the world famous "Peter's Sport Café" instead. August 2008 - Working with the boys from D.O.P. (Dept. of Oceanography and Fisheries of the local University) we surveyed the waters in Faial for an adequate place for our floating cage, where we plan to hold Mobula tarapacana caught locally.
August 2008 - The team meets with Norberto, owner and operator of Norberto Diver, and exchange ideas about the best location for staging a floating cage. August 2008 - Eventually the best location becomes the commercial port, where protection is highest and a simple holding pen (see white lines) will be set up, rather than a full floating cage. Water quality measurements are taken and provide 100% satisfactory results.
August 2008 - When collected, 40 nm off the island of Faial, the Mobula tarapacana will be transported back to Faial inside the 150 m3 cargo hold of the "Draga Areia" sand-dredger. August 2008 - The small fishing boat "Pérola da Horta" will be our seiner and will assist us in encircling the Mobula with a long seine net.
